Sounds gathering from Costa Rican, the cloud forest of Monte Verde. I returned last week, and this is what it sounded like in my room, windows opened. The partculars of the night -- mostly crickets and, in the distance, bats whistling. Transition into morning with first, the doves and alway the clay-colored thrush.
Originally recorded 1968 & released 2018. Say wiki: Described as "one of the most harrowing documents of pain and confusion ever made", the album was recorded after Spence had spent six months in Bellevue Hospital. Spence had been committed to Bellevue following a delusion-driven attempt to attack Moby Grape bandmates Don Stevenson and Jerry Miller with a fire axe. When first released, Oar was not promoted by Columbia Records, despite pleadings from producer David Rubinson. It was at the time the lowest-selling album in Columbia Records history and was deleted from the Columbia catalogue within a year of its release. Alexander "Skip" Spence (born Alexander Lee Spence, Jr.; April 18, 1946 – April 16, 1999) was a Canadian-born American singer-songwriter and musician. He was co-founder of Moby Grape, and played guitar with them until 1969. In the same year, he released this -- his only solo album, Oar, and then largely withdrew from the music industry. He had started his career as a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and was the drummer on Jefferson Airplane's debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. He has been described on the AllMusic website as "one of psychedelia's brightest lights"; however, his career was plagued by drug addiction coupled with mental health problems, and he has been described by a biographer as a man who "neither died young nor had a chance to find his way out." click link for more.

Also called the squeaky gate bird, this is taken from a Youtube recording in the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. I made my own recording when I was there last week on a bird watching expedition, but our guide talked pretty much straight through the entire walk...the birds are relagated to background sound. Shrug.

Passing through, in the margin between Dorchester MA and Monte Verde Costa Rica. I was struck by the repetition, at first thinking they were returning again and again with the same announcements...that, in fact, it was a tape loop that went on for a VERY long time. And also, noticed the difficulties one who was tasked with this duty might encounter in recording the names of missing strangers.

Robert Dwayne Womack (March 4, 1944 – June 27, 2014). Wiki says Womack grew up in the Cleveland slums, so poor that the family would fish pig snouts out of the local supermarket's trash. He had to share a bed with his brothers.[4] His mother told him he could "sing his way out of the ghetto." Recalling his childhood, Bobby said, "we came up very poor. My kids have had a much better life than I'd ever thought of livin,'" and, "the neighborhood was so ghetto that we didn't bother the rats and they didn't bother us. He was one of five children, and before he was 10, he was lead singer of his family musical group. They drew their talent from their mother, who played organ and led the choir at the Baptist church they attended. He was left handed and, when he was starting out, would flip the instrument upside-down to be able to play it.
