This single released in England in May 1967, and the full album in England in Sept of 1967. / Music journalist Robert Christgau has called the song "the most beautiful song in the English language". //// Interviewed in May 1967, Ray Davies stated that "if you look at the song as a kind of film, I suppose Terry would be Terence Stamp and Julie would be Julie Christie", referring to popular British film actors. HOWEVER, in 2008, he described the song as "a fantasy about my sister going off with her boyfriend to a new world", referring to Rosy Davies, who emigrated to Australia in 1964.
... the first of four singles credited to Davies in 1967 - 1968 (and a big hit), even though all of the Kinks played on this. / #288 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" listing, 2003 // See Link on left for his "solo" discography (ha! Ha!)

Jeff Beck died Jan 10th, at age 78. / * - the other was 'Stroll On', from the "Blow Up" film. IMHO, this was one of their 2 best singles, along with 'Heart Full of Soul' {played later in the show} - Lawrence Azrin/ Click on Link above, to see the rare original US single, with a color picture sleeve
* Cochran's girlfriend, a passenger in the car that crashed in England and killed Cochran on April 17, 1960. / Click the Link above, left, to view all 76 covers of this classic, his last US chart single before his death.
* - It was originally conceived as an instrumental: From Tommy Scott, the producer: "after blowing his harmonica for about seven minutes, Van suddenly burst into this spontaneous lyric. The ten-minute take was condensed to a single's length by cutting out the beginning and ending of the instrumental. / In 1966 he told an American reporter how it was inspired by an occasion in Nottingham Park as he walked by a graveyard wall where some children played next to it. {Morrison} "You know, man, there was life and death beside one another so close...yet so different...And then I thought of the bright lights in the children's eyes...and the cloudy lights in the eyes of the dead."
EVEN THOUGH Axton wrote this, it wasn't released till May 1969, on a various-artists mail-order album called 'First Vibration', and was not on not a widely available album till 1971 - 'Joy To The World'.
* - In 1969, he was invited by Robin Trower to replace Matthew Fisher on organ and David Knights on bass, at which point that band consisted entirely of ex-The Paramounts musicians. The Paramounts evolved into "Procol Harum" in the spring of 1967.
* - This was _not_ on the US version of this album, titled 'Over Under Sideways Down' / Click on Link above, to see the rare original US single, with a color picture sleeve

Jeff Beck died Jan 10th, at age 78. // They first recorded this with an Indian sitar player performing the distinctive instrumental figures. However, they were dissatisfied with the results, so Beck played it on electric guitar to emulate the sitar. Music writers have identified Beck's contribution as introducing Indian-influenced guitar stylings to rock music - one of the earliest examples of what became known as "raga rock". Beck's use of a fuzz box has also been cited as perhaps the first significant use of the effect.
