I think this is the only show I've EVER done with no talking.... but I had a (vaccine) fever so... I'LL LET THE MUSIC SPEAK FOR ITSELF BABY........ just kidding I won't, I ended up writing too many comments
the original demo/ outtake version from the recording of Comfort with vocals niiiice and low in the mix if you like that kind of thing; they re-recorded this song for their 2015 album but this one is much better, sorry Ken Andrews... I know he's supposed to be a production wizard or whatever but that's kinda the problem cause... the newer one is too slick! should be dirtier!
Some "early stuff". First of all: those WALLS of guitar that JUST HAMMER on one insistent, repetitive loop/ chord... If that doesn't KNOCK YOU OVER, like a really strong gust of wind... And then those vocal harmonies in the middle when things calm down OH my GODDDDDDDDDDDDD there are not words in any language to describe it
This song has probably made me cry like a thousand times, so what? Sparse, plaintive guitar, anguished vocals, variously mundane but simultaneously unsettling/ surreal lyrix... I'm just disgusted! Ughhhh!!!!
This is the second song on Fantastic Planet, which is 1. named after the movie 2. the last album they released before breaking up for like 17 years. If you listen to this without ever having listened to Failure you might be like ehhhhhh discount Nirvana band ehhhhhhhhhhh but I will vehemently argue on the contrary. The first time I heard this song, I thought there was actually something quite strange/ slightly wrong sounding about it, but that in itself can be a suuuuper compelling quality
Again - the early stuff. That outro, and in fact the song in general, is super primal. The whole thing has an extremely timeless feel! In fact I should say more but i'm already ruining it by presuming to uhhhhhhhh describe it
ARE YOU KIDDING ME with the guitar tones in this song?!?!?!!?!?!?!?! And the way the chorus or refrain (or whatever it is) kind of floats/ seems like it's suspended is (literally) breathtaking. AND THEN............. you think about the fact that this didn't even make it onto any album... this stuff came out before the Bends, it's like an "extra" song in a sense, meaning it's just hanging out on this EP... I mean, wait a minute... that level of brilliance is... apocalyptic
This is from their first album Comfort, which was produced by Steve Albini. The band did not like the way the record ended up sounding. BYE, Steve Albini!! And then this song specifically: it's slow, sinister, and prowling... you know something is coming....! Then that guitar solo in the middle (I really shouldn't call it a solo) is like quintessential Failure. Oh my God, it's genuinely just heavyyyyy, they played this song when they were in Boston a couple years ago and it was soo oppressive (in a good way, like filling the air, if you know what I mean!)
Early stuff, again. Mmmmmmm I don't know, what to say?, it's kinda just everything that's good about music, or about being.... alive? The sound/ recording quality is exactly what it needs to be... it's so dynamic... it's like it came from some occasionally tapped-into well of universally perfect sound
From the same EP mentioned above. It's SOOOOOO DARK, it ends and you just have to listen to it about five more times. The LYRICS are minimal, muffled, I mean you could bury your face in a pillow and cry/ scream when you hear it
Alright, the first time I listened to the (perfect) album this song is from (the second Failure album, Magnified), I immediately *CALLED* my sister and said LISTEN TO IT!!! This is like the epitome of an album-ending song. Greg Edwards wrote the lyrics for this song, they are incredibly oblique and tormented, and WHAT! THE! HELL!!!! IS THAT sickening rubber band type guitar?!?!?!?!??!?! AND it creates such a unique, inscrutable atmosphere
AGAIN with the ridiculous early stuff. If you look up this same song by "The Dee Dee Drums" it's an even earlier version. Again completely pushing the theoretical limit that feels like it should exist but apparently does not of how good.... can a song get.............. that RIFF is just pure 100% unchecked insanity!!!!!!! And when it speeds up a bit..... and does a key change or whatever it is.... it's like.............................. that
